Sea captain, merchant, iron manufacturer, trustee of the College of Philadelphia, and city official.

Appointed a member of the Governor’s Council (1747). Held various offices under the Provincial Government. A manager of the Second Philadelphia Lottery (1749). A founder and an original trustee of the Academy of Philadelphia.

He and his partner, Chief Justice William Allen, owned extensive ironworks in New Jersey.
