Strahan, William (1715-1785)

Printer, politician.

As a printer and publisher, Strahan worked with such figures as Edmund Burke, Adam Smith, Edward Gibbon, and Samuel Johnson. Became King’s Printer (1770). Member of Parliament (1774-84).

Introduced Franklin to future partner David Hall. Suggested a marriage between his son and Sally Franklin. His relationship with Franklin was somewhat strained during the war, but the two maintained their friendship and correspondence.

Born in Edinburgh.
