Livingston, William (1723-1790)

Lawyer, patriot and politician.

Active in New York politics, Livingston later moved to New Jersey, and was delegate from that state to the First and Second Continental Congresses. He became the first governor of New Jersey in 1776 and held that office until his death.

Born in Albany, New York. B.A., Yale, 1741. Married c. 1745 to Susanna French; had issue, including Sarah Van Brugh Livingston Jay, wife of John Jay.
