Hood, Zachariah

Maryland stamp distributor.

Annapolis merchant. Traveled to England and was appointed stamp distributor (1765). Hanged in effigy in Annapolis; fled for his life to New York (September 1765). Resigned office under pressure from New York Sons of Liberty (November 1765). Awarded £100 damages by Maryland Assembly. Returned to Maryland but was unable to resume business. Went to West Indies and petitioned Crown for relief (1771). Collector of customs at Philadelphia (1773).
