With the encouragement of Thomas Digges, undertook to ship a cargo of English woolens, linens, and clothing on the Brighton and deliver them to an American port not controlled by the British. Applied to Franklin for a passport and gave him a bond for £3000 (February 1780). Slipped away from his British convoy en route New York and landed the cargo in Boston.
