Tott, François, baron de (1733-1793)

French soldier and diplomat.

Served as Vergennes’ secretary in Constantinople (1757-63). Consul in the Crimea (1767-69). Organized Turkish defenses in Russia during the Russo-Turkish War. Inspected French consulates in the Mediterranean (1777-78). Served briefly as commander of Douai. Fled to Switzerland during the French Revolution (1790). Painter, amateur musician, and author of Mémoires sur les Turcs et les Tartares (4 vols., 1784).

Born in France to a Hungarian father. Married; three daughters. Died in Hungary.
