Stanhope, Philip, 2nd Earl (1714-1786)

Politician and mathematician.

Fellow of the Royal Society (1735). Talented mathematician; sponsored publication of various mathematical works. Liberal politician, active in Parliament. Associate of William Pitt, Lord Chatham, on whose behalf he corresponded with Franklin. Stanhope’s son Charles married Pitt’s daughter Hester (1774).

Educated at Utrecht and Geneva. Married Grizel Hamilton (1745).
