Taught French, history, and geography in Berlin, at the Military Academy in Copenhagen (1764-66), and in Frankfurt (1766-79). Met the Landgraf of Hesse-Homburg (1775) and founded the Patriotic Society of Hesse-Homburg under his sponsorship (1775). Later resided in Homburg and Vienna. Edited three periodicals on commerce, arts, and letters, and published several short treatises on the teaching and use of French.

Born at Verdun an der Maas, France. Married — Gimbel; two children.
