Swiss legal scholar and politician.

Rose to prominence during the Revolution; served as president of the Senate and the Directory. Author of a six-volume history of Basel (1785-1822) and of Projet de constitution helvétique (1797), which formed the basis of the Swiss constitution of 1798.
