Stiles, Joseph

Philadelphia merchant captain.

Immigrated to Philadelphia as a young man. Served on a privateer in King George’s War. Manager (from c. 1771), later treasurer (from c. 1789), of the Society for the Relief of Poor Distressed Masters of Ships. Treasurer of an organization that sought to establish an American wool, cotton, and linen factory (1775).

Born in Berkshire, England. Quaker; joined Free Quakers (1781).
