Dale, Richard (1756-1826)

American naval officer.

Joined the merchant marine (1768). Served briefly in the Virginia navy (1776) and, after being captured, in the British navy. Joined the Continental navy as midshipman of the Lexington (July 1776).

Twice captured and committed to Mill Prison; escaped both times. First lieutenant of the Bonhomme Richard (1779), the Trumbull (August 1781), and the privateer Queen of France (December 1781). Commander of the Queen of France (August 1782). Captain in merchant marine (1783-94). Captain in the United States navy (1794-1802, intermittently).

Son of Winfield and Ann (Sutherland) Dale of Norfolk County, Virginia. Married Dorothea Crathorne in 1791; had issue.
