Courter, Harmon

Sea captain.

Commander of the Oliver Cromwell, a Massachusetts vessel which was captured by the British (1777). Escaped from Forton Prison and made his way to France. Entrusted by the American Commissioners with dispatches to the Continental Congress. Arrived safely in Boston (May 1778).

His ship, the Jay, was rendered unseaworthy by a windstorm in Lorient, and he sought the aid of the Commissioners in finding another vessel to command (1780).

Alternate form of the name: Corter, Hammon or Hammond.
