Evidently specialized in trans-Atlantic trade; spent considerable time in the southern colonies. Met Henry Laurens in Amsterdam (1772); they collaborated in exporting new machinery for the South Carolina plantations. Returned to Charleston, where he dabbled in the slave trade (1773-74). Subsequently acquired several thousand acres of land in the Carolinas.
