Woodfall, Henry Sampson (1739-1805)

London journalist.

Apprenticed to his father, printer of the Public Advertiser (1754); soon assumed full responsibility for the newspaper (1760). Printed many articles by Franklin. Involved in numerous high-profile libel trials. Retired from journalism (1793); the Public Advertiser soon languished.

Son of Henry Woodfall of London. Educated at St. Paul’s, where he was something of a prodigy.
