Philadelphia merchant; Quaker politician.

Member of the Pennsylvania Assembly (1734-66); speaker (1750-64). Resigned and was replaced by Franklin (1764). Opposed the proprietary party, but, unlike Franklin, he opposed the Assembly’s petition to the King asking that royal government replace proprietary rule.

Born in Philadelphia. Married in 1739 to Sarah Logan (daughter of James).
