Harmar, Josiah (1753-1813)

Soldier.

Major of the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment (1776). Lieutenant colonel of the 6th Pennsylvania Regiment (1777). Breveted colonel (1783). Commander of the army (1784-91).

Served under both Washington and Henry Lee. Carried Congress’s ratification of the peace treaty to France (1784). Commander of the army stationed on the Ohio frontier. Breveted brigadier general (1787).

Unsuccessful in defeating American Indians north of the Ohio River (1785-87, 1790). Resigned from service (1792). Adjutant general of Pennsylvania (1793-99).

Born in Philadelphia. Married Sarah Jenkins in 1784.
