Amherst, Sir Jeffery (1717-1797)

British general.

Became commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America (1758). In that capacity he presided over the conquest of Canada.

Had difficulty in ending the Native America rebellion under Pontiac and was, as a result, recalled to England (1763).

Later served as absentee governor of Virginia, governor of Guernsey and officiating commander-in-chief of all British forces.
