Le Maire de Gimel, Jacques (b. 1749)

Agent for Virginia.

Gendarme de la garde under the name of Le M. de Lussemont (1764).

Traveled to the United States carrying letters from Patrick Henry to Franklin and William Lee (1776).

Sent to France by the Virginia Congress to assist William Lee in procuring arms and ammunition for Virginia (1778). Met with various difficulties in his dealings with the Lee brothers. Exhausted his own personal resources, and turned to Franklin for help.

Returned to the United States (1779). Compensated for his services in the form of a brevet commission. Served as a Virginia lieutenant-colonel of dragoons but received no pay.

Born in Vitry-le-François, Marne.
