Commissioned to command the ship Speedwell (1776). Made frequent trips between America and France. Commanded Morris’s ship Chevalier de La Luzerne (1779).

Prisoner at Lorient. Hoped to be exchanged for Captain John Kinnier.

Married Mary Armitt in 1779.
