Cartographer.

Studied botany at Edinburgh and was a physician in Virginia from (1735-46). Left America due to poor health (1746). Lived the remainder of his life in England, where he gained some fame for writings on botany and zoology, and became a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Between 1750 and 1755 he produced a map of British and French colonies in North America which was used at the 1782 peace negotiations between the United States and Great Britain and in settling boundary disputes well into the 19th century.
