Benezet, Anthony (1713-1784)

Abolitionist.

A Huguenot, Benezet fled France with his family, and settled in London. Joined the Society of Friends (1715).

The family moved to Philadelphia (1731). Benezet was a teacher for a short time before he became a merchant.

Wrote widely in support of the abolition of slavery and contributed to other charitable causes, including the relief of Acadian exiles in Philadelphia.

Born in Picardy, France. Married in 1736 to Joyce Marriott.
