Shirley, John (d. 1755)

Massachusetts militia officer.

Secretary to his father, Governor William Shirley of Massachusetts. Recruiting officer and captain in his father’s regiment. Register of wills, Suffolk County, Massachusetts (1754). Accompanied his father on the Oswego expedition, became ill with fever and dysentery, and died in New York (November 1755). Friend of Pennsylvania Governor Robert Hunter Morris, to whom he wrote vividly of the Oswego campaign.

Son of William and Frances (Barker) Shirley. Born in England; immigrated to Boston as a child with his parents and siblings (1731).
