Wealthy landowner. Organized and commanded a regiment, the “Jersey Blues,” in the abortive expedition against Canada (1746) and another in the Seven Years’ War. Captured, with half his men, when the garrison at Oswego fell to the French (August 1756). Taken to Canada, released on parole, and exchanged after the British took Fort Frontenac (August 1758). Organized a new regiment and was with the British forces that captured Montreal (September 1760).
