Suffering from an illness that began in 1774, he and his family left Charleston for England (1775). They traveled to southern France (April 1778) and lived near Le Vigan during the war.

The younger brother of Henry Laurens, whose daughters Martha and Mary Eleanor accompanied their uncle on a journey through France (1778).
