Calkoen, Hendrik (1742-1818)

Amsterdam lawyer and author.

Published several works on history, politics, and religion, most notably Het politiek Systema van de Regeering van Amsterdam … (Middleburg, 1780).

Posed a series of 29 questions about the American Revolution to John Adams in 1780; Adams’s replies were eventually published as Twenty-six Letters, Upon Interesting Subjects, Respecting the Revolution of America (London, 1786). Regent of the Amsterdam almshouse (1787-96).

Educated at Leiden. Married Sara (Boekhoff) Piers in 1803; five sons.
