Barton, William (1754-1817)

Philadelphia lawyer and author.

His writings included The True Interest of the United States, and particularly of Pennsylvania, considered; with respect to the advantages resulting from a state paper- money … (Philadelphia, 1786) and the Memoirs of the Life of David Rittenhouse, L.L.D., F.R.S., … (Philadelphia, 1813).

Elected to the American Philosophical Society (January, 1787).

Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Eldest son of Esther (Rittenhouse) Barton and of the Reverend Thomas Barton. Nephew of David Rittenhouse. Brother of Benjamin Smith Barton and of Matthias Barton. Married to Elizabeth Rhea.
