Hughes, John (c. 1712-1772)

Philadelphia farmer, merchant, and politician.

Member of the Pennsylvania Assembly (1755-64). With Franklin, opposed the proprietary party.

Obtained, through Franklin’s intervention, position as Pennsylvania’s distributor of stamps. Resigned due to public hostility toward the Stamp Act (1765).

Involved with Franklin in Nova Scotia land deals.
