Entered the mosquetaires noirs (1748). Chevalier de Saint-Louis (1760). Maréchal de camp (1771). Governor of Paris (1775-91). Lieutenant general and commander-in-chief of Louis xvi’s Constitutional Guard (1791). Executed in the French Revolution.

Son of Jean-Paul-Timoléon and Marie- Josèphe (Durey de Sauroy) de Cossé, duc and duchesse de Brissac. Married Adélaïde- Hortense Mancini; one daughter. Went by the title “marquis de Cossé-Brissac” until he succeeded to the dukedom (1780).
