Fitch, John (1743-1798)

Inventor.

Tried his hand at a variety of occupations including metal work, gun manufacture, and the sale of beer and tobacco to the Continental army.

Gained fame for his pioneering efforts in steam propulsion, on which topic he corresponded with Franklin. Fitch constructed several steam-boats, but his ventures always failed financially.

Born in Windsor, Connecticut. Married in 1767 to Lucy Roberts.
