West, William (1724-1782)

Philadelphia merchant and assemblyman.

Immigrated to Pennsylvania (c. 1750), where he established himself as a merchant and Indian trader. Represented Cumberland County in the Pennsylvania Assembly (1756-57). Founding member (1771) and president (1774-76) of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. Member of the American Philosophical Society (1768). Developed a substantial trade with St. Eustatius during the Revolutionary War.

Son of William and Ann (Osborn) West of Urlar, Ireland. Married Mary Hodge in 1757; several children, including John West.
