Gunner on the Lexington (February 1777). Lost his leg in fighting; hospitalized in England (September 1777). Escaped to Dunkirk (1778). Attempted to return to America but was driven ashore and confined in a French hospital. Twice appealed to Franklin to help him return home (1778-79).
