Hazard, Samuel (1714-1758)

Philadelphia merchant and civic leader.

Early member of Gilbert Tennent’s Second Presbyterian Church (1743); received and distributed evangelical correspondence from England. Manager of Philadelphia lottery (1748). Trustee of College of New Jersey (Princeton) (1748-57). Trustee in sale of New Building to the Academy (1749-50). Manager of and subscriber to Pennsylvania Hospital (1754). Published a Scheme for the Settlement of a New Colony to the Westward of Pennsylvania (1755); Franklin complained that Hazard had appropriated his ideas.

Married Catherine Clarkson. Father of U.S. postmaster Ebenezer Hazard.
