Commission seeker.

British by birth, Cole moved to France as a child and later served with the French army.

Sought a commission on a privateer (1777). Asked Franklin for a recommendation to officials in Georgia (1778).

Moved to the United States and fought in the American Revolution. Practiced law in North Carolina until he returned to France (1791).
