Frankfort printer, type founder, and an aulic councilor to the Duke of Württemberg.

Sought to reform abuses in the traffic in German redemptioners to the colonies. Beginning in 1750, worked with Jospeh Crell to obtain German Protestant immigrants to settle on the frontiers of Massachusetts. He and Crell quarreled, and their cooperation ceased in 1752. Sought Franklin’s help in obtaining money due him for services rendered to Massachusetts (1765).

Franklin and John Pringle apparently visited him when they were in Germany in the summer of 1766.
