Hartley, David (c. 1730-1813)

British statesman and scientist. Member of Parliament (1774-80, 1782-84).

Became friends with Franklin in London prior to February 1774. Favored reconciliation between Great Britain and the American colonies and opposed the slave trade.

Negotiated prisoner exchanges with Franklin during the Revolution. Appointed plenipotentiary in Paris, where he and Franklin helped to negotiate the treaty that ended the war.

Towards the end of his life Hartley dedicated himself to scientific pursuits and the development of methods of fire prevention.
