Cochin, Charles-Nicolas (1715-1790)

French artist.

Studied engraving with his father and quickly rose to prominence. Engraved many plates to commemorate special occasions such as royal marriages. Garde de dessins du roi (1752). Secretary and historian of the Académie royale de peinture (1755).

Designed the frontispiece of the Encyclopédie. Specialized in portrait medallions; drew a portrait of Franklin (1777) that was engraved by St. Aubin.

Son of Charles-Nicolas and Louise- Magdeleine (Horthemels) Cochin, both engravers.
