Berington, Joseph (1746-1827)

English Catholic priest.

Served as a priest in France, Staffordshire, and London. A political and theological liberal; advocated civil liberties for Catholics and simplification of Catholic doctrine. Wrote abundantly on theological, philosophical, and historical subjects. Friend of Joseph Priestley.

Son of John and Winifred (Hornyold) Berington of Herefordshire. Educated at St. Omer.
