Distinguished himself at the battle of Fontenoy (1745) and rose steadily to the rank of lieutenant general (1759). Published several books, including Discussion intéressante sur la prétention du clergé de être le premier ordre d’un Etat (1767), which was suppressed, and a work on Chinese military science (1773).
