By his own account, a former lieutenant in the French service. Went to America (c. 1778) where he was the aide-de-camp to Colonel Armand, the marquis de la Rouërie. Returned to France.

With hopes of returning to the United States, wrote to Franklin seeking the commission of captain in the American service (1781).
