Gore, Obadiah (1744-1821)

Prominent resident of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

Trained as a blacksmith. Visited the Wyoming country several times as a deputy for his father, a member of the Susquehanna Company, and eventually settled there. Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. Surveyed and helped found Sheshequin Township (1786), where he kept a store and distillery. Held numerous town and county offices. Pioneered the use of anthracite coal as a fuel. Raised fruit and silk-worms.

Son of Obadiah and Hannah (Parke) Gore of Norwich, Connecticut. Married Anna Avery (1764); five children.
