Agent du clergé (1765) and bishop of Rodez (1770).

Friend of Turgot and the éconimistes. Presided over the assemblée provinciale and instituted a conseil juridique. Transferred to Bordeaux (1781).

Highly criticized for spending much of his time at Paris. Proposed that the clergy renounce its tax privileges in favor of the tiers etat. Named garde des sceaux by Louis XVI (1789).
