Pitts, Mary (d. 1772)

Mortgagor.

With her husband, mortgaged property on Walnut St., Philadelphia, to Joseph Grant of Boston. Franklin sent William Franklin a power of attorney from John Franklin and Jonathan Williams to place an attachment on this mortgage, in order to give them a claim prior to those of Grant’s other creditors (1753). The affair dragged on until 1776, when Franklin recorded in his memorandum book, “Receiv’d of Hugh Bay in full Discharge of Mary Pitt’s Mortgage £502 16s.
