Chatham, John Pitt, 2nd Earl of (1756-1835)

British general and politician.

Served in the army during the siege of Gibraltar (1779-83). In 1809, he led a failed campaign against Napoleon (1809).

Succeeded his father as earl of Chatham (1778). During the administration of his younger brother, William Pitt, he held several important political positions, including first lord of the admiralty (1788-94) and president of the privy council (1796-1801). From 1820 until his death, Pitt was governor of Gibraltar.

Married Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas, first viscount Sydney, in 1783; no issue.
