Hancock, Thomas (1703-1764)

Boston merchant. Uncle of John Hancock.

Began his career as a bookseller and soon expanded to other mercantile ventures including the export of provisions to the Newfoundland fisheries.

One of the wealthiest men in the American colonies, he was a generous benefactor of Harvard College. He left his fortune to John Hancock.

Married Lydia Henchman in 1730.
