Arcet, Jean d’ (1725-1801)

French chemist

Began his career as a private tutor in Paris (1742). Studied medicine (M.D., Paris, 1762) but never practiced. Lecturer in chemistry at the Collège de France. Published treatises on the chemical effects of fire and the nature of diamonds and precious metals, among other topics. Discovered fusible alloys, which improved the stereotyping process.

Married Mlle. Rouelle; three children.
